PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (CNS) — Following the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the City Council on Thursday will consider a resolution declaring Palm Springs as a Safe City for reproductive freedom and access to abortion.
Council member Christy Holstege asked the council to consider adoption of the resolution following last month's decision that stripped away federal abortion protections, leaving the issue up to individual states.
Numerous states are in the process of or have since passed laws prohibiting abortions at varying stages of pregnancy.
"The city of Palm Springs should serve as a model and commit to support and defend the right to reproductive freedom and safe access to abortion services," according to a staff report on the resolution.
The adoption of the resolution would deem Palm Springs a safe haven for people to exercise their reproductive rights.
The Palm Springs City Council meeting, held on the second and fourth Thursday of each month, will begin at 5:30 p.m.
