LOS ANGELES — For 59 years, The Cinecon Classic Film Fest has celebrated rare, classic and newly restored movies from cinema’s rich history.
Running from Aug. 31 to Sept. 4, this year’s Cinecon will be held at El Segundo’s Old Town Music Hall, which dates back to the 1920s and features a 1925 Mighty Wurlitzer Organ. Scott Lasky is one of four musicians who will accompany silent films with live organ performances.
Cinecon president Stan Taffel says the festival is an important venue for film preservation and conservation, and allows audiences to see films rarely screened. It is estimated that up to 80% of all films ever made have been lost over time to deterioration, misplacement and other factors.
This year’s festival also celebrates the 100th anniversary of introducing 16mm film and will feature several newly restored features and shorts.
