LOS ANGELES — On the eve of their first performance, the fate of Roe v. Wade had still not been disclosed, but director Vanessa Stalling said the cast and crew were prepared, artistically if not emotionally, for the expected decision out of the Supreme Court.

Playwright Lisa Loomer had written what Stalling called an “obituary version” of her play “Roe.” They had hoped they’d never have to perform it, but when they open Friday night at the Fountain Theatre, that version will get its world premiere.

“Stories shape culture,” Stalling said, “and help us to start to understand a moment that feels really confusing and potentially makes us feel quite lost.”

“ROE” runs at the Fountain Theatre’s outdoor stage through July 10.
