We caught up with Chick Fight leads, Malin Akerman and Bella Thorne, who reveal how this female empowerment comedy bruised them. Producer and star Akerman is headlining her second recent feature in the new comedy. Thorne co-stars along with Alec Baldwin.
Five Things You Need to Know:
- The film follows a down on her luck woman who discovers an underground, all-female fight club, which empowers participants to gain the confidence they need.
- Akerman is from Sweden and was featured in Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle and also co-starred in the HBO comedy series, The Comeback. She gained her first co-starring roles in the romantic comedy films, The Heartbreak Kid and 27 Dresses. In 2009, Åkerman played the female lead in Watchmen Silk Spectre II, a role for which she was nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress. Other films and TV series include the comedy Wanderlust and the musical film Rock of Ages. She had her first lead television role with the short-lived ABC comedy series Trophy Wife. "
- Apart from acting and modeling, Akerman had a brief music career as the lead vocalist for alternative rock band, The Petalstones in the early 2000s, but eventually left to focus on her acting career.
- The soundtrack for Chick Fight was written and produced by Benson Taylor. Taylor also recorded a song with Los Angeles based band, Bones UK. Malin's youngest sister Jennifer Akerman wrote seven original songs for the soundtrack, performed under her artist name, "Final Child."
- Akerman told us, "I love boxing and that’s the way I get out all my energy and rage and I think it’s healthy if you do it in a productive way, and we obviously found a fun way to present it in this film." Both Akerman and Thorne took some punches in the ring, but their stunt double had it worse. "On our days of our really big fight scenes, I was having such bad knee problems and it lasted for two more days," Akerman said. "My goodness, I did not have it bad, who had it bad was our stunt girls."
