LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Hollywood's major acting union has approved three- year contracts covering motion pictures, television and new media production by a nearly 3-1 margin.

What SAG-AFTRA described as a "record-breaking" $318 million contract was approved 75.22 percent-25.78 percent in national voting completed Wednesday. Turnout was 27.15 percent.

According to the union, the contracts provide meaningful wage increases, improvements to funding for the benefit plans and significantly improved residuals for streaming video, new protections governing nudity and simulated sex scenes and sexual harassment prevention.

The agreement becomes effective retroactive to July 1 and expires June 30, 2023.

"I am grateful for the many members who got involved and used their voices to help set the priorities for this contract," said union president and negotiating Committee Chair Gabrielle Carteris. "This is a forward thinking agreement that builds on the changing realities of the streaming business and positions our union to continue the fight for a safer workplace for all."

The board of the union's Los Angeles Local voted to oppose ratification of the contracts, arguing a better deal could be clinched.
