Sharonville, OH – Students at Sharonville Elementary School celebrated Buddy Day Tuesday.

The event dates back more than 30 years. It's a chance for students to bring an adult to school for the day.

  • School has around 450 students
  • 400 to 500 visitors expected for Buddy Day
  • Students raise money for Cincinnati non-profit

“It's a day where the students are able to bring a special guest to school with them,” said Sharonville Elementary School Principal Kasi Jordan. “Some refer to it as Grandparents Day but we like to call it Buddy Day because its a day for anybody of any of our students.”

Parents, grandparents, neighbors, family friends, and others mad up the special guests for the day. Students from Princeton High School's Key Club also spent part of the day with students.

Throughout the day, students and their guests spend time in the classroom, recess, and eat lunch together.

Alex Metcalfe, a student at Sharonville, brought his dad Garrett. Alex said he was looking forward to recess.

““I've been to buddy day since first grade here, “Garrett Metcalfe told Spectrum News 1. “I love it, it's fun. I get to see what he does, see his friends. See a lot of old teachers that I went to school with also. It's kind of a cool thing.”

The students spent the month of November raising money for ProKids, a Cincinnati non-profit that works volunteers who assist children who are abused and neglected.

In all, the students raised $1,127.07 for the organization. To date, Sharonville Elementary has raised around $60,000 for various charities, organizations, and relief efforts.

Students and guests also got a chance to enjoy the Scholastic Book Fair in the library.
