They also got a chance to talk to State Rep. Jim Butler (R-41) who is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy.

Students in Mitch Miller's American Government class heard from their teacher and other staff members at the school who are veterans.

The event, “Take a Vet to School Day” was made possible by Charter Communications and The History Channel. Charter is the parent company of Spectrum News 1.

Butler spoke about his time in the Naval Academy and working his way through flight school. He told the students about how he used to land fighter planes on an aircraft carrier. Butler eventually earned his wings before being medically discharged from the U.S. Navy.

“It's not just a day off, but a day where students are able to hear from veterans, to understanding the importance of honoring veterans,” Butler explained to Spectrum News 1 about participating in the Take a Vet to School Day.

Oakwood schools are in Rep. Butler's district. He has three children who attend the schools.

Butler also said he hopes the students learn from the veterans.

“If they see a way to serve they should go for it,” Butler said. "Put that effort in and make it happen."

Students in the American Government class also got a chance to watch a short video produced by The History Channel. Afterwards they were given cookies, wristbands, and a t-shirt.
