CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- It’s been a slow recovery since Miriam Thompson suffered a stroke eight years ago.

  • Florence McCorkle-Eury started Risa's Special Delivery to show love and support for her community.
  • She was inspired by a sermon at her church.

She gets family support, but nothing like she got from Florence McCorkle-Eury and her small army of women.

“You hardly ever sleep at night when you're getting ready for a delivery. it's just like waiting on Christmas morning,” said McCorkle-Eury.

The women brought items Thompson needs and some of her favorites.

“Just knowing her condition right now, it could be me, and that's why we came to make sure she knows we love her and we care for her,” said McCorkle-Eury.

The delivery to Miriam's house was Florence's fourteenth since she started doing it earlier this year and wants to continue expanding that number.

“There was a message preached at my church and it was titled. ‘Special Delivery.’ From that it gave us the will to outside the four walls of the church and show genuine love for people,” said McCorkle-Eury.

The deliveries are named after her cousin Risa who fell ill and died. Florence gets nominations to help to people who are struggling. They bring everything from snacks to air conditioners -- and always balloons.

“She gives, gives and gives of herself. She doesn't do things to get things back in return. She is always looking for the next person to bless,” said Cassandra Houston.

Happiness isn't always easy to find, and Florence is on a mission to remind people of its impact.

“Show them love. If you don't do nothing but pat somebody on the back, tell them their outfit looks nice, all of these are deliveries. It's not about the money. It's not about coming out to someone's house with all these balloons like we do, but it's just letting people know you care,” she said.
