CALGARY, Alberta — The Calgary Flames (12-9-4) are set to play The Columbus Blue Jackets (11-9-3) at the Flame’s Scotiabank Saddledome Tuesday at 9 p.m. EST.
The two teams have a tragic connection in Johnny Gaudreau. The player, dubbed Johnny Hockey, played for both teams. He was picked in the fourth round of the draft by Calgary in 2011 before signing a seven year contract with Columbus in 2022.
Unfortunately, he’d never finish that contract as he and his brother, Matthew, were struck by a car and killed while biking in their New Jersey hometown on Aug. 29 on the eve of their sister’s wedding.
The hockey players’ deaths rattled the Columbus community, who continued to honor them by leaving a memorial full of flowers, stuffed animals and more in addition to a candlelight vigil in the days afterward.
The Blue Jackets and fans honored the players at Columbus’ home opener and at the start of the preseason.
According to a post on the Flames’ website, the Gaudreau family will be in attendance at the game.
