The aftermath of 12-week-old Ribbet being attacked was hard to take in for the team at Second Chance Animal Services.

"The horror of seeing the dog, everybody at our Worcester hospital was in tears," said CEO Sheryl Blancato.

Blancato says the adopter broke their contract when instead of giving the dog back to second chance, re-homed Ribbet to a household with a much larger dog, and that's when the attack happened.

"Crushed its skull, so it had a fractured skull, and severe damage to both eyes which unfortunately were not savable," Blancato said.

Ribbet was rushed into surgery, and is now on his road to recovery. Blancato says he's eating and doing well.

"He is a total snuggle bug," she said with a smile. "Really seeks out being held and being near people."

The holiday season is fast approaching. A time when pets can be gifted and situations like this can happen. Blancato says avoid the surprise element if you can. Make sure everyone impacted by the adoption can be in on the planning process for safety's sake.

"But especially if there's other pets in the house," she said. "Just bringing something, some other pet that they've gotten, that they don't know is compatible with what is in the house."

Blancato says they've already had many people reach out looking to adopt Ribbet, which they plan on doing once his health has improved. She also says they're looking into taking legal action after the contract was broken.
