MASS. - The winners of the first drawing in the Massachusetts VaxMillions contest was announced Thursday.
Darrell Washington, 63, of Weymouth is the first $1 million winner and 15-year-old Daniela Maldonado of Chelsea is the winner of the first $300,000 college scholarship.
Gov. Charlie Baker was joined by Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito, state treasurer Deb Goldberg and others to make the announcement.
"I would like to thank the state of Massachusetts...For me to be the first one is a really big deal," Washington said after he accepted a large check for $1 million. "It was rather improtant for me to get the vaccination because I have family members with comorbidities."
Washington, a case manager for Blue Cross Blue Shield, said he would be "doing good things" with the money.
Madlonado said she's looking at Boston University and University of Massachusetts to study history and math. Maldonado said her family is low-income so without the money it would've been more difficult to achieve higher education.
According to Gov. Baker, 4.3 million residents have been fully vaccinated in the state, roughly 4.5 million people have received at least one shot and the state is administering 7 to 10,000 shots per day.
