CHICOPEE, Mass. - Michael King brings his 16-month-old dog, Dusty, to Chicopee State Park five to seven days a week.
"He is high energy," said King. "If this guy doesn't run at least 10 to 12 miles a day, it makes for a long night."
King has been hiking the state park for 20 years. Since he got Dusty, he always brings the German Short Haired Pointer with him. "He makes for a great hiking companion," King said.
Two weeks ago, Dusty stepped on a fishing lure, which then got stuck in the dog's mouth.
"Those hooks work effectively. They do what they were designed to do because you can't pull them out," King said. "So I was in a tough situation there."
Two park rangers stepped up to help. They were able to clip off the hook and get Dusty to the vet. Dusty had to undergo surgery and get stitches. King said because of the park rangers and the vet, his furry friend's life was saved.
King wants people to be aware about the dangers of leaving lures and lines behind when fishing, so what happened to his dog won't happen to anyone else.
"It is so important that we go out and make sure when we leave, we leave the area where we were at, the same way it was when we came," said King.
Hearing about what happened to Dusty, "Make MA Fishing Spots Great Again," a group who picks up trash around fishing areas, raised money to help cover the cost of Dusty's vet bill.
"I was so choked up when I got the information in regards to the level of support my pointer and I got on this," said King.
King is very thankful for the support and hopes more people will help keep the park clean and pick up after themselves.
