WORCESTER, Mass. - The city of Worcester paid tribute to firefighters who passed away over the last year and a half. The ceremony included the reading of the names, the laying of wreaths, a gun salute and the tolling of a bell at the department's headquarters on Grove Street.

It honors both retired and active members of the department. More than a dozen names were read this year, including Lt. Jason Menard, who died in the line of duty in November of 2019. The department says it's a special day to recognize and honor the contributions these firefighters made to the city, community and department itself.

"These men and women came to work every day of their careers never knowing what was going to happen that day, what kind of danger or situation they might be in," said Deputy Chief Martin Dyer. "They made that commitment to the city, we think it's really important that we honor their lives, their duty, to their families, right? So that they know they're appreciated by this department."

There were more than 100 in attendance Sunday. No ceremony was held last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The city is currently building a firefighter memorial on Grove Street, which will honor all those who died in the line of duty. It's expected to be completed in the fall of this year.
